UnitedHealthcare and Providence: what changes on January 1, 2027

Last checked: September 15, 2026. I read UnitedHealthcare's notice in full that day. The carrier's page carries no date of its own, so I re-read it before each update to this page.

The short answer

UnitedHealthcare says Providence's hospitals and providers in Oregon and Washington will no longer be in its network for people enrolled in UnitedHealthcare Individual Medicare Advantage plans, effective January 1, 2027. Coverage through December 31, 2026 does not change, and UnitedHealthcare is mailing letters to the members this affects.

Three Providence stories are circulating. This is one of them.

Around here the name Providence is attached to three separate things happening at once, and they get mixed up constantly.

1. This one. Providence the care system, its hospitals and providers, leaving UnitedHealthcare's Individual Medicare Advantage network on January 1, 2027.
2. Providence Health Plan, the insurance company, which is winding down most of its business for 2027. Different organization, different decision. That one is covered here.
3. Legacy Health, a different health system entirely. As of the date on this page UnitedHealthcare describes that as an open negotiation with an October 1, 2026 deadline, covering more plan types than this notice does. What that letter means, and the carrier's page is at uhc.com/legacy.

Same region, same season, three decisions that have nothing to do with each other.

What the notice covers

UnitedHealthcare's notice applies to Individual Medicare Advantage plans in Oregon and Washington. It lists employer coverage, Washington group retiree plans, Washington Dual Special Needs plans, Oregon Chronic and Institutional Special Needs plans, and Medicare Supplement plans as not impacted.

Read that list carefully, because the same notice says UnitedHealthcare is still negotiating to renew several of those relationships before January 1, 2027. “Not part of this announcement” is not the same as “settled for next year.” The carrier's page is where the current status lives.

Why this lands differently in Clark County

Providence does not run an acute care hospital in Clark County, so for people here this is a cross-river question. On UnitedHealthcare's impacted list, the ones closest to home are Providence Portland, Providence St Vincent, Providence Milwaukie and Providence Willamette Falls. The Washington side of the list runs much wider and includes every Swedish hospital along with Everett, Centralia, St Peter and Kadlec.

If you are in the middle of treatment

Ask about continuity of care, and ask early. UnitedHealthcare says members in active or ongoing treatment for a serious or complex condition may be eligible to keep seeing their provider at in-network cost for a period of time. Cancer treatment and transplant services are the examples it gives, and it says the list is not limited to those.

What it is not: automatic. Members apply by calling the number on their member ID card, and the carrier decides who qualifies and for how long. Nobody, including me, can tell you in advance that you qualify. Make the call, get the answer in writing, and plan around what it actually says.

Emergencies

Unchanged, and worth repeating to anyone who is anxious about this. Go to the nearest hospital. UnitedHealthcare says emergency care is covered at the in-network benefit level regardless of whether that hospital is in the network.

What to do about it

If you do not use Providence or Swedish, this notice asks nothing of you. If you do, three things:

• Write down every doctor, hospital and clinic you use, with the city next to each one. The city is what settles most questions here.
• Verify each of them against the 2027 provider directory for the exact plan you are considering. Directories for next year post October 15.
• If you are in treatment, call the number on your member ID card about continuity of care before the end of the year.

UnitedHealthcare also names other systems as examples of continuing in-network access, including Oregon Health & Science University, Adventist Health Portland, Tuality Healthcare and Willamette Valley Medical Center in Oregon, and MultiCare, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, UW Medicine and EvergreenHealth in Washington. Treat that as information, not an answer: a system appearing on a carrier's list does not establish that your plan, your doctor and your location all participate. That gets checked one provider at a time.
