Providence and Medicare in Clark County

Four clinic sites changed hands in 2024. If one of them was yours, the building stayed and the organization behind it did not.

The short answer

PeaceHealth acquired four Providence Medical Group clinic sites in Clark County, finalising in December 2024, and renamed them. Providence does not run an acute care hospital here. If you picked a Medicare plan partly to keep a Providence clinic in Vancouver, that is worth re-verifying — network contracts follow organizations, not addresses.

What actually happened

In October 2024, PeaceHealth and Providence announced an agreement for PeaceHealth to take over four Providence Medical Group sites in Clark County. The transfer was expected to complete that December, after which the clinics were renamed. Around a hundred staff worked across the four sites, providing primary care, walk-in care and outpatient rehabilitation.

Providence continues to operate substantially in the Portland metro area, including its hospitals there. What changed is the Clark County primary care footprint specifically.

Why this matters more than it sounds

An ownership transfer is easy to shrug at when your doctor is still in the same room on the same street. But network contracts are held by organizations, not buildings. The entity that contracts with your Medicare plan can change while everything you can see stays identical.

That is the quietest kind of coverage change there is. Nothing arrives in the post. Nothing looks different at reception. The difference shows up when a claim is processed under a contract you did not know had moved. If you chose your plan around a Providence clinic in Vancouver, treat that assumption as needing a fresh check rather than a carried-forward one.

The Clark County cross-river problem

With Providence’s hospitals on the Oregon side, people here who want Providence hospital care are relying on how their plan handles cross-river providers. Plans differ on this more than on almost anything else, and “the plan operates in the region” is not the same as “your Portland specialist is covered.” Verify the specific providers.

How to confirm your plan works at Providence

Network participation changes every year, and it can differ from one physician to the next inside the same organization. Do not rely on any website for this, including ours. Confirm it against a live source before you enroll, and confirm it again if you change plans.

    Check the plan's own provider directory

    Every Medicare plan publishes a searchable directory. Search for your specific doctors by name, not just for Providence. The system can be contracted while an individual provider is not.

    Call the number on the back of your plan card

    Ask them to confirm, on the record, that your named providers are in network for the coming plan year. Ask for a reference number for the call.

    Call Providence billing directly

    Ask which Medicare plans they are contracted with for the coming year. Providers know their own contracts, and they will tell you plainly if something is changing.

Two things that catch people out

The system is not the doctor. A health system can hold a contract with a plan while a particular clinic or physician inside it does not participate. Always verify by provider name.

Directories go stale. Published directories lag behind actual contracting. A phone confirmation from the plan, with a reference number, is worth more than a screenshot.

Does Providence still have clinics in Clark County?+

Its footprint changed substantially. PeaceHealth and Providence agreed in October 2024 that PeaceHealth would acquire four Providence Medical Group clinic sites in Clark County — Esther Short, Camas, Mill Plain and Vancouver Rehabilitation — with the transfer finalising in December 2024 and the sites renamed. Providence does not operate an acute care hospital in Clark County.

My clinic was Providence and now it is PeaceHealth. Did my doctor change?+

Often not. In a site transfer the physicians and staff frequently stay put while the organization above them changes. What can change is which health system holds the network contract with your plan, and that is a separate question from whether your doctor is still in the building. Verify by physician name rather than assuming either way.

Why does an ownership change matter for Medicare?+

Because network contracts are held by organizations, not buildings. When a site moves from one health system to another, the contracting entity behind your care can change even though the address and the staff did not. That is exactly the kind of change that is invisible until a claim is processed differently.

I use Providence in Portland. Does that work from Clark County?+

Many Clark County residents use Portland-side providers and plans handle cross-river care differently from one another. It is not automatic, and it is the single most common thing people here get wrong. Verify that your specific Portland providers are covered under the plan you are considering, not just that the plan operates in the region.

Which Medicare plans work with Providence?+

We do not publish a list. Network contracts change between plan years and sometimes mid-year, and after an ownership transfer they are more likely than usual to have moved.
