PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center at 400 NE Mother Joseph Pl in Vancouver is a Medicare-certified acute care hospital of roughly 275 beds, and one of the largest employers in Clark County. It carries emergency, medical and surgical, oncology, obstetric and psychiatric services, and it serves the wider Columbia-Willamette region on both sides of the river.

For most Clark County residents it is simply the hospital — the one an ambulance heads to. That familiarity is exactly why the coverage question gets misunderstood.

The part people get backwards

The fear we hear most often is some version of “what if I have a heart attack and they take me somewhere my plan does not cover.” It is a reasonable fear and it is largely misplaced.

Medicare Advantage plans are required to cover emergency and urgently needed care without prior authorization and regardless of whether the hospital is in their network. So put your attention on planned care

Scheduled surgery, imaging, outpatient procedures, infusion and oncology are where a hospital being in or out of network changes what you pay — and they are the situations you can actually plan around. If you already know you have a procedure coming, or you are in ongoing treatment, that is the single most important thing to check before choosing a plan.

Your doctor and your hospital usually travel together

Physicians admit to particular hospitals. Choosing a plan around keeping your doctor can quietly choose your hospital as well, and the reverse is equally true. People tend to optimize for one and discover the other in January. If you have a preference on both, say so at the review so they can be checked together.
