Providence Medicare Advantage Is Ending for 2027

If you have Providence Medicare Advantage, this is the update you have been waiting for. It is not the one they hoped for.

By Timothy Jones, licensed independent Medicare agent · · 6 min read

The short answer

Providence tried to sell its Medicare Advantage business to a national insurer. That deal fell through. Reporting in late August said the plans end at the close of this year, which would leave more than 64,000 members across Oregon, Washington and California choosing new coverage for 2027. Your care continues through 2026. The window most people will use is Annual Enrollment, October 15 through December 7.

Where the story actually stands, as of September 7, 2026

I want to be straight with you about something, because it will matter when you get mail.

The news coverage and Providence’s own member page are not saying the same thing yet. Reporting from around August 24 says the Medicare Advantage line is ending. Providence’s status page, last updated August 20, still says coverage continues through 2026 and that no action is needed at this time. The reporting is newer than the notice. That gap is normal when a company is still working through regulators, and it usually closes with a letter addressed to you. Until that letter arrives, treat the news as very likely and the official instructions as not yet written.

Three facts, in order

  1. 01

What ended: the sale, not your card

Providence had been working to sell its Medicare Advantage business to a national insurer so those plans could keep running. In late August the reporting said that deal did not come together. Providence had already announced in May that it was winding down most of its other insurance lines. The Medicare Advantage piece was the part still being negotiated.

  2. 02

What has not changed: your care this year

Your coverage runs through the 2026 plan year. Providence's own member update still says no action is needed right now. Keep using your plan. Keep your appointments. Nothing about your card changed the day that news came out.

  3. 03

The date that matters: January 1, 2027

If the Medicare Advantage line does end, it ends at the close of this plan year. That makes Annual Enrollment, October 15 through December 7, the window most people will use to choose 2027 coverage. Anything that arrives in the mail with a Providence return address between now and then is worth opening the day it lands.

What I would do this month

  1. 01

Find out which card you actually have

Providence sells more than one kind of coverage. A Providence Medicare Advantage plan is not the same thing as a Providence commercial plan, a Providence Medicaid plan, or Original Medicare with a supplement that happens to pay Providence doctors. The words Medicare Advantage appear on the card. If you are not sure, take a photo of the front and the back and bring it.

  2. 02

Write down your doctors before you shop anything

Primary care, every specialist, and the hospital you would want to be admitted to. Mark which ones are Providence, which are The Vancouver Clinic, which are Legacy, and which are OHSU. This list decides more than any brochure will. It is also the part people reconstruct badly from memory in October.

  3. 03

Wait for your Annual Notice of Change if you have other coverage

If you also carry a drug plan or a second policy, its notice is due by September 30. That letter is the only thing that tells you in writing what your other coverage is doing next year. Leave it sealed if you like. We can open it together.

  4. 04

Book the compare call before October 15 if you can

Before October 1 I can go through your current coverage, your doctors, and your enrollment timing. After October 1 we can put those same lists next to 2027 options. Booking now means you are not calling during the first week of Annual Enrollment along with everyone else.

If you live in Clark County and cross the river

This is the part I spend the most time on with people in Vancouver. Providence doctors matter when you pick what comes next, and so does whether The Vancouver Clinic accepts the plan you are considering. Plenty of people here see a primary care doctor on this side and a specialist in Portland. A plan that reads fine on paper can still fail on the drive south. Write the city next to every name on your provider list before you compare anything.

It is also worth knowing that this is a different kind of problem from a hospital leaving a network. When a health system and an insurer cannot agree on a contract, as happened with UnitedHealthcare and Legacy Health, your plan continues and the provider list changes. Here it is the insurance company itself winding down. The rules that apply are not the same, which is why the enrollment timing question is one to confirm rather than assume.

The windows people mix up

Annual Enrollment is the one most people mean when they say open enrollment. There are two others, and they open for narrower reasons.

A word on Medigap and Original Medicare

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement are different products with different rules. If you carry Original Medicare with a supplement, this news is not about your policy. If you are on a Medicare Advantage plan and are wondering whether a supplement is an option for 2027, that answer depends on your state and your timing, and Washington’s rules are friendlier than most. It is a real conversation, not a form. Ask me and we will go through it.

Questions I am getting

Is my Providence Medicare Advantage plan cancelled right now?

No. Coverage continues through the 2026 plan year. As of September 7, 2026, Providence's own member status page still says no action is needed at this time. News reporting from late August says the Medicare Advantage line will end at the close of the year after a sale fell through. Those two are not yet saying the same thing, so watch for a notice addressed to you.

Do Providence hospitals and clinics close too?

No. Providence the care system and Providence Health Plan the insurance company are different things. Doctors, clinics and hospitals continue seeing patients. What is winding down is the insurance side.

When can I change plans?

Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7 for coverage that starts January 1. When a plan does formally terminate, Medicare rules also provide an enrollment window that runs past Annual Enrollment. Whether that applies to you depends on notices Providence has not posted yet, so confirm your own dates with Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or Washington's SHIBA program before you count on any deadline.

I live in Vancouver and see doctors in Portland. Does that change anything?

It makes the provider list more important, not less. Plans sold in Clark County differ most in how they handle care across the river. Bring the city name next to each doctor.

Bring me the card and the doctor list

I am a local independent agent in Vancouver. I am not Providence and I am not calling to move you anywhere. Before October 1 we go through what you have now and what your timing looks like. After October 1 we can put that next to 2027 options. There is no cost to you for the review.

I will update this page when Providence or CMS posts clearer transition instructions. Last checked September 7, 2026.
