UnitedHealthcare and Legacy Health reached a deal

Legacy stays in network. Nothing to do. Here is what that does and does not change before Annual Enrollment.

Last checked: October 1, 2026. I read both official pages that day.

The short answer

They signed. Legacy announced a new contract with UnitedHealthcare on September 30, effective October 1, and UnitedHealthcare confirms Legacy's hospitals and providers remain in network.

The old agreement ran through September 30 and the new one started the next day, so there was no day in between when Legacy was out of network. The October 1 date you were told to watch has passed without anything happening to you. If you were bracing for a change, you can stop.

Both statements are public: uhc.com/legacy and Legacy's news release.

What the two sides actually said

UnitedHealthcare describes it as a multi-year agreement and names the coverage it applies to: employer-sponsored and individual commercial plans, Medicare Advantage plans including Group Retiree and Dual Special Needs Plans, and Community Plan of Washington Medicaid plans. It covers Legacy hospitals and providers across the Portland and Vancouver metro areas.

If you have Medicare through UnitedHealthcare, that includes you. If you have both Medicare and Apple Health on a dual plan, that includes you too — the D-SNP line is spelled out rather than left to inference, which is worth knowing because those members often get the least clear information during a contract fight.

UnitedHealthcare says letters are going out to members who were notified earlier, telling them the relationship is renewed. Neither statement published the financial terms, and I am not going to characterise terms nobody released. How long “multi-year” runs was not specified either.

What this does not change

Annual Enrollment still runs October 15 through December 7 for coverage starting January 1, 2027, and the rest of your comparison is untouched: your drugs, your other doctors, your costs. One reason somebody might have been planning to switch has gone away. The other reasons have not.

Networks are also not permanent. Contracts renew on a schedule, and this is the second Legacy negotiation to go public in recent years. The habit that actually protects you is verifying your own providers against your own plan each year, rather than reacting to whichever dispute reaches the news.

If you already made a move

If you delayed care or moved an appointment while this was unresolved, call and get it back on the calendar. Legacy says in its own release that it will work with UnitedHealthcare members to minimise disruption, including helping people reschedule appointments and procedures that were put off. So you are not asking for a favour when you call — they have said in writing that this is what they are doing.

And if you changed plans in anticipation, bring that to your review. A change already made has its own rules and its own timing, and undoing it is not always possible outside an enrollment window. That is the quiet argument against panic-switching during a contract fight.

One thing that is still changing

This agreement does not touch Providence. UnitedHealthcare has separately announced that Providence's hospitals and providers in Oregon and Washington leave its Individual Medicare Advantage network on January 1, 2027. Different health system, different date, different plan scope. If you use both, one is settled and one is not. More on Providence in Clark County.

Questions people ask

Is Legacy Health in network with UnitedHealthcare?

Yes. Legacy announced a new contract on September 30, effective October 1, and UnitedHealthcare confirms Legacy's hospitals and providers remain in network. The old agreement ran through September 30 and the new one began the next day, so there was no gap and the October 1 out-of-network date is off.

Do I need to do anything?

No. There is nothing to sign, call or switch because of this. If you moved an appointment or put off a procedure while the outcome was unclear, the useful thing now is to get it back on the calendar.

I already changed plans because of this. What now?

Bring it to your review. A change already made has its own rules and its own timing, and undoing it is not always possible outside an enrollment window. That is worth looking at together rather than guessing, and it is a good argument for not panic-switching during a contract fight.

Does this affect the Providence change?

No. Providence is a separate decision UnitedHealthcare announced for its Individual Medicare Advantage plans in Oregon and Washington, effective January 1, 2027. A Legacy agreement does not touch it. If you use both systems, one is settled and one is not.

Could this happen again?

Yes, and it probably will. Contracts renew on a schedule and negotiations get public when they get difficult. The durable habit is checking your own providers against your own plan each year during Annual Enrollment, rather than reacting to whichever dispute makes the news.

Does this change anything for Annual Enrollment?

Not directly. Annual Enrollment still runs October 15 through December 7 for coverage starting January 1, 2027. What it changes is one of the reasons someone might have been planning to switch. The rest of the comparison, your drugs, your other doctors, your costs, is unchanged.

Network status verified October 1, 2026 against UnitedHealthcare's and Legacy Health's published statements. Contracts change, and a page is only as current as its last check.
