The short answer

Kaiser Permanente is an integrated system: the health plan and the medical group are one organization rather than two businesses under contract. So choosing it means choosing its physicians, and choosing something else generally means its physicians are not available to you for routine care. That is not better or worse than the usual arrangement — it is a different trade, and it is worth making deliberately.

Why this page is shaped differently

An integrated system collapses that. There is no contract between plan and provider to go looking for, because they are the same organization. The question stops being “does this plan cover my doctor” and becomes “am I willing to make this system my doctors.”

The trade-off, honestly, in both directions

What people tend to like

Records, referrals and scheduling live inside one organization, so coordination between your primary care doctor, specialists and pharmacy is generally tighter than it is when three separate businesses have to talk to each other.

What people tend to miss

Choice narrows to that system’s physicians rather than the wider market. And leaving later is a bigger move than switching plans normally is — you are changing doctors, not just changing cards.

Neither column is the right answer in the abstract. Which one matters more depends almost entirely on one thing: whether you already have physicians you intend to keep.

The detail people are usually surprised by: Kaiser does not run its own hospital in Clark County. Hospital-level care is arranged through contracted facilities, and Kaiser’s own published directory lists Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center among the places its Clark County members are seen.

That matters if you have a view about which hospital you would end up in. Contracted hospital arrangements can change, and Kaiser’s own directory is the authoritative source for the current one — not this page, and not any other third party.

A note on emergencies, since it comes up

None of this changes emergency care. Medicare Advantage plans must cover emergency and urgently needed care without prior authorization and regardless of network, integrated system or not. That is a rule about the Medicare program itself. Cost sharing and follow-up care after you are stabilized still vary, so confirm those with your plan.

How to confirm your plan works at Kaiser Permanente

Network participation changes every year, and it can differ from one physician to the next inside the same organization. Do not rely on any website for this, including ours. Confirm it against a live source before you enroll, and confirm it again if you change plans.

Every Medicare plan publishes a searchable directory. Search for your specific doctors by name, not just for Kaiser Permanente. The system can be contracted while an individual provider is not.

Ask them to confirm, on the record, that your named providers are in network for the coming plan year. Ask for a reference number for the call.

Two things that catch people out

The system is not the doctor. A health system can hold a contract with a plan while a particular clinic or physician inside it does not participate. Always verify by provider name.

Directories go stale. Published directories lag behind actual contracting. A phone confirmation from the plan, with a reference number, is worth more than a screenshot.

What does it mean that Kaiser Permanente is an integrated system?+

The health plan and the medical group are the same organization. With most Medicare Advantage plans, an insurer contracts with independent doctors and hospitals, so the plan and the providers are separate businesses. With an integrated system they are not. That is a structural difference, and it changes what you are deciding when you pick a plan.

Can I see Kaiser Permanente doctors if I have a different Medicare plan?+

Generally not for routine care. Because the medical group belongs to the health plan, its physicians are typically available to that plan's members rather than to the general Medicare market. Emergency care is a separate matter — Medicare Advantage plans must cover emergency and urgently needed care regardless of network. If you want a specific Kaiser physician, verify availability with your own plan before assuming.
