WA Cares Fund: benefits are now available
Washington's long-term care benefit began paying out in July 2026. It is not Medicare and it is not Medicaid, and understanding the difference matters more than the number.
Medicare does not cover long-term care
This is the most expensive misunderstanding in this whole area. Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing custodial care β the day-to-day help with bathing, dressing, eating and getting around that most people actually need as they age.
It can cover limited skilled care in specific circumstances, which is a different thing. Assuming Medicare has this covered is how families end up paying out of pocket for years.
What WA Cares is
A Washington programme funded by worker contributions that pays a lifetime benefit toward qualifying long-term care services and supports. Benefits became available in July 2026.
It is not means-tested the way Apple Health is, and it is not connected to Medicare. It stands on its own.

Eligibility limits change periodically. Please verify the current limits with the program before applying.
See current limits at WA Cares FundThis is a maximum for people who qualify fully, not a payment everyone receives. What you can claim depends on your contribution history and on your care needs at the time. Some older workers qualify only for a prorated amount through the transition pathway, and someone who never contributed does not receive it at all.
Who qualifies
- Contribution history. You must have paid into the fund for enough time under the programme's rules.
- Care needs. There is an assessment of whether you need help with daily activities. Contributing is not by itself enough.
- The transition pathway. Some older workers who were closer to retirement when the programme started can qualify for a prorated benefit. Worth checking if you assumed you had missed it.
What it is not
Not Medicaid
Apple Health is separate, means-tested, and has its own long-term care support. Having one does not give you the other.
Not Medicare
Different programme, different funding, different purpose. Medicare does not do this job.
Not a complete answer
A lifetime benefit helps. Long-term care can cost considerably more than that over time, so it is one piece of a plan rather than the plan.
Where to check your own situation
Contribution history and eligibility are specific to you, and the programme is the only place that can tell you where you stand.
Questions people actually ask
Does every Washington senior get this?
No. It depends on your contribution history and on your care needs at the time you claim. Someone who never contributed does not receive it, and some older workers qualify only for a prorated amount through the transition pathway. Treat any headline figure as a maximum for people who qualify fully, not as a payment everyone receives.
Is this Medicaid?
No. WA Cares is funded by worker contributions and is not means-tested the way Apple Health is. Having WA Cares does not give you Apple Health, and having Apple Health does not give you WA Cares.
Doesn't Medicare cover nursing homes?
This is the most expensive misunderstanding in this whole area. Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing custodial long-term care β the day-to-day help with bathing, dressing, eating and moving around that most people actually need as they age. It can cover limited skilled care in specific circumstances, which is a different thing. Assuming Medicare has this covered is how families end up paying out of pocket.
I already retired. Did I miss it?
Not necessarily. There is a transition pathway for some older workers that can provide a prorated benefit based on years contributed. Whether it applies to you depends on your work history, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.
What can the money be used for?
Qualifying long-term care services and supports. The programme sets what counts, and it is broader than many people expect β it is not limited to a nursing home. Check the current approved uses at the WA Cares site.
