Medicare in 2026: What Vancouver Seniors Need to Know

The Medicare landscape is shifting. With new caps on drug spending and changes to premium costs, here is exactly what you need to prepare for in 2026.

πŸ“… Book in 30 seconds

The 2026 Medicare year introduces several significant shifts, primarily driven by the ongoing implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act. For seniors in Clark County, understanding these changes is critical to avoiding unexpected costs and ensuring your doctors remain in-network.

2026 Medicare Cost Benchmarks

Medicare Part B (Medical)

  • Standard Premium:$202.90 / month
  • Annual Deductible:$283
  • *Higher earners may pay an IRMAA surcharge based on 2024 tax returns.

Part D (Prescriptions)

  • Max Out-of-Pocket Cap:$2,100 / year
  • Max Deductible:$615
  • *The $2,100 cap is a major relief for seniors with expensive medications. Once reached, you pay $0 for covered drugs.

Working Past 65? Planning Your Retirement Transition

One of the most common situations I help with in my Vancouver office involves people who have continued working past age 65 and are now ready to retire. Transitioning off an employer group health plan onto Medicare requires careful timing to avoid late enrollment penalties.

If you are planning to retire in 2026, you will need to coordinate your Medicare Part B enrollment with the loss of your employer coverage. This creates a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

  • You will need a form filled out by your employer proving you had creditable coverage.
  • We should start planning 2-3 months before your actual retirement date.
  • We need to compare continuing on COBRA (which is often expensive) versus moving directly to Medicare.

The "Ripple Effect" on Medicare Advantage

Because insurance companies are now responsible for more of the drug costs once you hit the $2,100 cap, we are seeing a "ripple effect" in other areas of Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans.

To balance their budgets, some carriers altering their networks, changing extra benefits (like dental/vision allowances), or adjusting copays for specialist visits. It is highly recommended that you do a full review of your 2026 Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letter to see how your specific plan is being affected.
